Two Cups on a Fence

I was walking up Avenue A this afternoon, when I saw these two cups on the fence that surrounds Tompkins Square Park:

Seeing trash discarded so carefully is not surprising; East Villagers are adept at stacking trash.

What is surprising is that the wind, or some passing miscreant, didn't knock them down!

It makes me think these had just been placed there, only moments before.

Wire Hangers

There was a time when a site such as this would have indicated that a back-alley abortionist was put out of business:

Of course, that was before my time!

These days, so many discarded dry-cleaner hangers, outside of no dry cleaning establishment, could only mean one thing: some couple broke up.

Yup, one of the two would not throw away the hangers — probably wouldn't throw away anything — and now they separated, and the one who is keeping the apartment got rid of the hangers.

Rocks on the Stump

I was walking through Tompkins Square Park yesterday, when I saw something strange. Someone had placed rocks on the stump that is all that remains of the tree that blew down back in July!

As if that wasn't strange enough, today they were gone!

Who does this kind of thing?

Wasted Booze

I was walking up Avenue A this afternoon, when I saw this unfinished bottle of booze on the fence:

Who doesn't finish this quantity of booze?! It's not even a shot!

East Village Today Reboot

The East Village Today blog began in 2014 as an effort to promote awareness of East Village coolness today, as opposed to the bad old days of the 80s and 90s. It was highly successful, but that was seven years ago! So much has changed in that time. 

Probably the most important change is that some fucking Ukrainian stole my domain name! OK, I wasn't keeping up with my email, so I missed the repeated warnings from Go Daddy that my domain name was about to expire, but that doesn't mean it's OK to take it.

Look at this:

This is where my domain name resides now! It's so far away, the East Village isn't even on the map!

Another Senseless Baby Bird Death

Unfortunately, not everything that happens in the East Village is happy happy joy joy.

Following the death of the beloved Hawky in August, came this senseless baby bird death, on East 6th Street:

One East Villager wrote:

This beautiful young soul will never sore high up in the clouds bringing the caring people joy and happiness of watching his magnificence. He never got the chance to live his life. Instead he suffered a horrible death.

Another Senseless Hawk Death

Here's another thing that happened while I was busy not posting—

Back in October, 2017, in a post called Against The Hawks, I wrote:

The Parks Department should trap the hawks and move them to the Adirondacks, where they belong.

Unfortunately, my words were not heeded, and now another senseless hawk death has occurred.

Here is a picture of the dead hawk, whose name was Mr. Hawk — or Hawky,
as he liked to be called:

What's next, wolverines?! If wolverines move into the park, are East Villagers just going to say "They're so helpful — they eat the rats!"

Rats respond to one thing only: poison. If we're going to get rid of the rats, we have to move the hawks, for their own safety.

Target

A lot of awesome things happened in the East Village these past couple of months — there's nothing new about that!

One of the most exciting is that the local Target finally opened at the corner of Avenue A and East 14th Street!

Here is a picture of the inside, looking through the window on East 14th Street:

This Target is so special, there are ads for it even outside the East Village, like this one on the north side of East 14th Street at First Avenue:

To celebrate their opening, they paid homage to East Village history by re-creating the outside of the beloved dive bar CBGB:

Unfortunately, this angered many older East Villagers, who were quick to point out that Asian women and Black men did not go to CBGB, at least not in its heyday, when they went.

Most East Villagers were not affect by this historical revisionism, and love the great prices to be found at Target!

Secret Messages

Whoa, Nelly — I've been away for a while!

Not away, exactly, just not posting. I have been taking pictures though, and even uploading them to this site, for future use.

This is one of them:

It's a secret message, written on an envelope, and left in an unassuming place: beside a bicycle lock on a tree-guard railing on East 7th Street.

That's a pretty clever way of delivering a message!

Happy 4th Anniversary!

It's true! Today is the fourth anniversary of every East Villager's favorite blog: East Village Today!

To celebrate, here is a picture of a teeny-tiny steam roller, that I saw this morning on East 7th Street:

It's questionable whether this roller is actually powered by steam, but just as horsepower is a unit of power equal to 550 foot-pounds per second, even though we don't pull things with horses any more, that's just what it's called!
