Where did that thing come from? I wondered, but then I remembered the old saying "The branch doesn't fall far from the tree" — so I looked up!

Many of the trees in Tompkins Square Park are old, and on their last leg, so to speak.
One good thing: there's a nice view of the sky from this spot now!

that is a strange thought to think, but trees do have an age. many are in the 70's or 80's or even older, and then, it's all over for the tree. we, living shorter life spans, see trees as 'always being there'. to have see one age out is both a surprise ('whoa - that tree is dying from old age!') and traumatic ('that beautiful old tree is dying - it's been there forever'). once the tree dies, we see it's replacement, some puny stick that we are sure will never make it, and certainly will never be as majestic as the tree it replaces.
