No Sorry We're Closed

I was walking around the East Village this past Saturday morning, when I passed by the beloved David's Cafe, on St. Mark's Place.

They were closed:

No Sorry We're Closed.

By beginning the engagement with the answer No, this sign assumes the posing of the question "Are you open?" — even before spoken!

I thought to myself: What if the question is "Are you closed?"

What a strange and confusing answer!

  1. one could almost read that as 'no sorry' - meaning they are not offering any apology, and 'we're closed' - an emphatic statement that they are indeed closed. :-)
