Dumpy Abandoned Building

As I wrote earlier, I was walking along East Houston Street last night. Along the way, I noticed this dumpy, abandoned building:

It looks like a half-drawn peace-sign painted onto the front, and of course a lot of plywood windows — but it has its own ATM!

Notice of Intention to Discontinue Service

On Wednesday, I told you that a Notice to Call For Inspection notice had been taped onto the door of an abandoned building on First Avenue, near East 2nd Street.

Yesterday, I passed by there again, only to find that the Notice to Call For Inspection notice was gone, and in its place was this Notice of Intention to Discontinue Service notice:

I wonder if anyone called to make an appointment to have the building inspected?

Notice To Call For Inspection

Whenever I take the subway to work, I pass by this building on First Avenue:

Abandoned graffiti building.

I've thought about taking a picture of it before, but I couldn't think of anything to say about it. It's not enough to be cool — everything in the East Village is cool! — it has to be cool and somehow noteworthy!

Today, however, that changed. I now have this to say: Yesterday, someone put a Notice To Call For Inspection notice on the door:

I wonder if anyone will call? I bet some reclusive artist lives and works inside there. There's probably a treasure-trove of art, waiting to be discovered!

Another Victory

Back in December, I wrote that there is a building on East 13th Street that I could never get a picture of without a car parked in front of it.

Well, I finally did it:

Avenue D

People sometimes ask me, they say: "Hey East Village Today, what is Avenue D really like?"

And I tell them, "People, the buildings on Avenue D are really short!"

Short buildings at the corner of East 3rd Street.

Short buildings between East 4th and 5th Streets.

Short, abandoned buildings between East 6th and 7th Streets.

And this is the corner that was made famous in The Simpsons episode "Dancin' Homer":

Falling-Down Building

Sometimes people ask me, they say: "Hey East Village Today, what's up with that building on Avenue C and East 3rd Street, anyway?"

Well, the answer is this: It's falling down. Take a look:

Sagging in the middle, separating on the left edge.

There's even a chain attached to the scaffolding, but I don't know which one is holding up which!

One of these days it's just going to crash to the ground, pulling the scaffolding down on top of it. Someone will say: "Was that a truck driving by?"

"I don't know. I guess we'll hear about it on the news tomorrow."

Eventually, I'll pass by again and think: What was it that used to be there?

Another Abandoned Building

The funny thing about abandoned buildings is that they're never really abandoned — they're always still there!

This is the newest abandoned building I found, on East 2nd Street:

Rusk

The East Village is not the only part of the city with abandoned buildings, but it might be the only area where abandoned buildings are cherished.

This building is on East 12th Street, across from Sauer Park, between Avenues A and B:

New and old together.

If that tree wasn't still holding its leaves, I'd have got a better view of the front. Plus, a dead tree would add more to the character of the place!

DK Lost

Today, I am introducing a new category: Abandoned Buildings.

Since starting this blog, I've taken three or four pictures of this building, and each time there was a car parked in front of it. I would like a picture of it without cars, but I don't know if that's ever going to happen.

This building is on East 13th Street, across from The Jefferson. It's abandoned, covered with graffiti, and helps to maintain the look that this block is known for.
