The Grass of East 13th Street

Part of the charm of the East Village is its desolation: dilapidated signs, fences, buildings, all create a sense of abandonment that is highly prized.

The Jefferson, a building that stretches between East 13th and 14th Streets, between Second and Third Avenues, maintains this look. They planted grass, in the place of flowers or shrubs, and let it grow wild, to replicate the grass that grows in abandoned lots, or out of the cracks of broken sidewalks:

Wild grass.

In other areas, this would evoke the wrath of the neighborhood association — in the East Village, it might help them win the Mollie Parnis Dress Up Your Neighborhood Contest!
