Shrouded Tombstone Tree

Sometimes, something painted on a vertical surface is art. Other times, it's a makeshift tombstone.

I was walking through Tompkins Square Park yesterday afternoon, when I saw this makeshift tombstone painted on a tree, complete with shadowy figure standing over it:

She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail.

The cross indicates that the deceased was a christian. The lack of name indicates that the deceased had no name, just the initial "S". Squirrel, perhaps.

There's no freshly-turned soil to indicate that the squirrel was buried; maybe it's just a memorial. Maybe a hawk ate a squirrel in this tree.

Squirrelly, we hardly knew ye!

  1. i think it is a memorial. it is like those crosses you see along the highways, marking the place where someone was killed in a car crash, but they are not buried there.

as you say, it may very well be where hawk ate skwirl, as there are RTHawks in TSPark.

    I-)
