Fillmore East Memorial

Recently, I wrote that East Villagers bring the past to life through their store names. For Fillmore East, it's not possible. Today, an Apple Bank for Savings operates where the Fillmore East once operated. I'm not sure what puns would work for that!

In cases like these, there are other ways to keep the past alive. One way is with a mosaic dedicated to the venue:


Or a mosaic dedicated to the owner:


Or a street named after the owner:


If none of these are sufficient, there's always the plaque on the building:

It's hard to believe that only two years after Fillmore East closed, CBGB opened! East Villagers are more of the CBGB type: cynical and nihilistic. It's what make the East Village so cool!
